Are you looking to rent a unit within a large apartment building? If so, you need to consider the following things when it comes to which floor and side of the building you live on.

The Ground Floor

If the building is offering a garden apartment, this means that it is directly on the ground floor at street level. One of the things to be aware of is that these units have little privacy and people can view inside your apartment since it's at ground level. If you have outside access, you will lack having an enclosed balcony that other people above you have. However, you won't have to deal with going up steps or waiting for an elevator, which may have a big appeal to you. If you have kids that tend to run around a lot, you also won't have to worry about them disturbing the neighbors below you.

The Top Floor

The highest floor of an apartment building is going to have some advantages and disadvantages. One thing that you may not realize is that a top floor apartment is going to be the hottest of all the floors in the building. This can make your cooling bills increase during the summer when you need to turn on the air conditioning. However, you won't have to deal with the noise of people living above you, which makes the unit quiet in comparison to lower units.

The West Side

If the apartment building primarily has west and east exposure, you may be wondering which side is best to live on. The west side of the building is going to have the sunlight that comes in during the evening, which may be more enjoyable to you when you come home after working all day long. This gives you more time with natural sunlight when you can enjoy it the most.

The East Side

The opposite is true of the east side of the building. You'll have light coming in during the morning to help wake you up, but you'll have more shade during the day. However, you can use that sun during the morning to your advantage in the winter by leaving your shades open so that the sun can heat up the inside of your home and help your apartment stay warmer.

The North and South Side

An apartment with north or south side exposure is going to be very similar to each other, with them not getting direct sun exposure during the morning or evening. This may be preferred if you like having privacy and keeping your blinds closed most of the time.
